During last week’s Fifth Annual Taste of Mount Laurel at the cafeteria of Hartford School, guests were whisked off on a grand culinary tour of the world without having to leave town. Around 500 guests braved the freezing cold to indulge in the best cuisine Mount Laurel’s restaurants had to offer at a function sponsored by the township, says Meredith Tomczyk, township clerk. From old favorites such as Gaetano’s and Carlucci’s Waterfront to relative newcomers such as the Cake Stand Bakery and Victoria’s Bagel Bistro, savory and sweet treats from around the world were available for guests to sample.

Tomczyk said: “The event serves as a way to let residents know the different types of restaurants that are available around the area. It also gives new businesses like Yogurtland, who just opened, an opportunity to let people know they’re here.”

Mount Laurel’s Genevieve Kollasch said she sampled many of the dishes on offer. Her personal favorite was the Indian cuisine served by Monsoon, one of two Indian restaurants to participate in the event.

She added that she had eaten at Monsoon once before and really enjoyed it, and went on to say: “Tonight, I loved everything they had.”

Her companion, Ronnie Hays, had another favorite: the sushi display by Kampachi. She raved about the sushi presentation and said that, even though she didn’t partake in any, it looked fantastic.

A highly-trained sushi chef expertly prepared a rainbow of rolls that included the ever-popular California roll, comprising cucumber, avocado and crab wrapped in seaweed, and Philly rolls, a local favorite consisting of crab and cream cheese. There was also a selection of sushi with all the accompaniments, such as wasabi, pickled ginger and soy sauce. The restaurant even distributed chopsticks.

Apart from Japanese and Asian foods, Italian cuisine was on offer at many of the tables. No less than nine different Italian eateries put forward their takes on traditional family recipes such as pasta, bruschetta and meatballs.

The event also featured more familiar tastes, such as Smoothie King and Chick-fil-A. Both had their most popular menu items available and were ready to respond to questions from curious diners.

Culinary arts qualifications can be the start of an exciting career as a professional chef or can even open doors into the field of hospitality management.
